iPad Publishing with Apple iBooks Author (351)

  • Class Highlights:
Apple iBooks Author is the fastest way to get your content on the iPad. This class provides a thorough explanation of using iBooks Author’s powerful features, including: page composition, typography, dynamic content and interactive elements. The class concludes with an exercise that guides you through the creation of an eBook that includes many dynamic and interactive elements.
  • Class Description:

Apple’s new eBook creation application is a major advance in eBook publishing. Apple extends the existing ePUB3 standard to make full use of the iPad’s amazing capabilities. iBooks Author makes it quick and easy to create professional page layouts with “multi–touch” features that include:

    • Dynamic Navigation
    • Pop–up Images
    • 3D Graphics
    • Image Galleries
    • Slideshows
    • Animations
    • Video
    • Interactive Elements

The results look like a laboriously–coded application, but they are easy to produce. These eBooks are created using standard page–layout methods — no coding required. They can either be sold through Apple’s iBook store or simply distribute them for free yourself.

We suggest that you bring your iPad to class with you (or you can share ours).

    Prerequisite:

None. This class assumes some knowledge of publication design, but since the user interface is different from InDesign or QuarkXPress, the class will cover all the basics.

    Software:

iBooks Author is available at no cost from the Apple App Store. It requires Mac OS X Lion (10.7.2) or later. All iBooks produced with iBooks Author and offered for sale must be sold through the Apple iTunes Store. Apple will also distribute free iBooks through its store at no charge.

iBook Author vs. Adobe DPS: If you are producing a print publication and also want a tablet edition, you may find it more efficient to repurpose print layouts using Adobe DPS (see: Tablet Publishing with InDesign Digital Publishing Suite). Or if you need to publish to tablets that are not iPads, you will need to use Adobe DPS. However, if you are producing a publication solely for tablets and recognize that the tablet market is almost entirely iPads, iBooks Author is definitely your best solution. iBooks Author is a much more polished program than Adobe DPS. It is faster and easier to use and not encumbered by a complicated fee structure — it just works.
